Sessions:

            1) 15 Jan    2) 22 Jan    3) 29 Jan    4) 5 Feb    5) 12 Feb

            6) 26 Feb    7) 5 Mar    8) 12 Mar    9) 19 Mar

Town and Country is a nine session daytime course for anyone interested in writing about the importance, significance and influence of place, location and environment. It is designed for poets as well as prose-writers and requires no previous experience in creative writing. Classroom sessions will comprise writing activities, read-and-discuss tasks, and peer- as well as tutor-feedback. A weekly homework assignment will be set, and all tasks and necessary texts will be available on handouts. We will discuss the work of well- and lesser-known writers, beginning with an exciting sneak (pre-publication) preview of Robert Macfarlane’s Underworld, in session 1.

These creative writing courses are designed to offer participants as much opportunity to write as possible. They are conducted in a warm, familiar and supportive classroom environment.

Saturday/One-Day Workshops

  1. Getting started with creative writing – a fun workshop for beginning writers

[Saturday 19 January, 10.30 – 15.30]

Especially suitable for those who are slightly hesitant about writing, this is a (writing) fun-and-games workshop with serious intent. Participants will produce at least five pieces of writing during the day.

  1. How to write better poetry – a practical workshop for amateur poets

[Saturday 26 January, 10.30 – 15.30]

Especially suitable for those who write poetry and would like to see it published. We will aim to produce one good poem each, and first drafts of several others.

  1. Writing Your Family Stories – a practical workshop on autobiography and writing for your family

[Saturday 9 February, 10.30 – 15.30]

Especially suitable for those with an interest in how their family stories (history) can be presented as creative writing. Participants will complete three pieces of writing during the workshop, based on photographs and/or objects they bring with them.
